EBay Auctions - Listing Techniques for Strong eBay Sales

PDF Print
Products don’t sell themselves on eBay Australia, so your listings must be professional, informative, and get the customer excited. Here’s how to do just that.

Your listing title needs to say exactly what the item is. The keywords used are those used by the eBay search so be sure to
use all the keywords for your product and use all the 80 characters you have for the title. Do not use words like 'look', 'must see' etc., as most eBay buyers don't pay attention to them, and don’t use the eBay search for a ‘wow’.

Choose the category for your eBay listing carefully. With hundred of different categories to choose from, this can be difficult to determine. If you feel your item fits in more than one, feel free to select a second category. More than one category does incur extra fees, so be aware of that as you list.

When choosing a starting price, don't set your opening bid too high. A high starting price will cause more ebay buyers to ignore your eBay auction. A low starting price gets people interested in your auction, and will hopefully result in a bidding war. Determine the lowest amount of money you will take for your item and begin the bidding at that amount.

Don’t overcharge for shipping, this can put buyers off your eBay listing. They can see how much others charge and have the same access to the Australia Post website. Clearly state your combined shipping discounts to encourage multiple purchases. After receiving payment for your item, ship it promptly by the stated method. Leave feedback at this point to encourage the same and show the customer you have confidence in your product.

Offer as many payment methods as possible. All buyers have a preferred method, so if you don’t offer it, they won’t bid. By using payment methods that are preferred by eBay buyers such as Paypal, you can increase your eBay sales.

A picture is worth a thousand words in an eBay auction. People are much more likely to bid if they can clearly see the item. Always include at least one picture, and add more for higher priced eBay items. Use a good quality digital camera or a scanner if the item is flat. Proof your pictures to make sure they are clear and crisp, and crop where needed.

Give a detailed description of your item, including any flaws. Think of any keywords that you would look for if you were searching for the item and include those in the description. Encourage visitors to view your other eBay items and about me page. Also offer a newsletter to get email addresses for you to contact them later. You should create a mailing list for later sales outside of eBay Australia. Remind them to add you to their Favorite Sellers list.

Choose your eBay listing time wisely. Most eBay sales are on the weekend, Friday and Sunday nights are usually most productive. Stagger your listings even by only 5-10 minutes to give people watching multiple items a chance to be part of the last minute bidding.

Answer any questions that you receive from potential buyers promptly. Some buyers may ask for a clarification on your listing or additional pictures. Be ready to provide them the information they request.

A professional unique listing will increase your eBay sales. Achieve this by creating an eBay template to use with all your listings. Basic html is very easy to use and you can create stunning auction templates with Microsoft Word or FrontPage. Alternatively, choose from thousands of free and low-cost auction templates available online. Using templates where possible saves listing time later, the professional appearance which will help customers recognize your listings and increase confidence in bidding. Be creative and modify your templates, but don't overdo it with bright colours and animated gifs. Provide a clear and honest description highlighting good picture.
